Microsoft Teams Direct Routing

Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, delivered as a service

Sell Microsoft Teams calling under your own brand. Spanvox runs the certified, multi-tenant Session Border Controllers and the Teams provisioning, so ITSPs and PBX vendors keep their carrier, their numbers and their margin. No SBC to buy. No PowerShell. No certificate fire drills.

  • Certified multi-tenant SBCs
  • Bring your own carrier
  • White-label, your brand
  • No PowerShell, no certificates
What it is

Teams calling on your network, without the SBC project

Direct Routing is how Microsoft lets you connect Teams Phone to any carrier through a certified SBC, instead of buying Microsoft Calling Plans. It is the original bring-your-own-carrier path: keep your trunks, your numbers and your rates.

Doing it yourself means certified SBCs, mutual-TLS certificates, per-tenant PowerShell and high-availability you build and babysit. Direct Routing as a Service hands all of that to us, so you ship Teams calling as a product, not an infrastructure programme.

How it works

Teams on one side. Your network on the other.

We sit in the middle as your certified Session Border Controller, bridging Microsoft Teams to your carrier, your numbers and your PBX, with signalling and media encrypted end to end.

Onboarding

Live in four steps, on your domain or ours

Connect your carrier, pick a domain, and we configure Teams. No SBC to rack, no certificates to chase, no PowerShell on your side.

01

Connect your carrier

Point your SIP trunk at our SBC, or keep the carrier you already run. Bring your own carrier and numbers.

02

Choose your domain

Bring your own, or use a Spanvox subdomain. We provision the FQDN, DNS and TLS certificate either way.

03

We configure Teams

We register the certified SBC and generate the voice routing: PSTN usages, routes and policies. No PowerShell.

04

Assign numbers, go live

Provision tenants and users from the portal in minutes. Calls ring natively in Microsoft Teams.

Use a Spanvox subdomain

The fastest path. We own the DNS and the certificate, so there is nothing to set up on your side.

  • Zero DNS or certificate work
  • Ready in minutes
  • Auto-renewed, monitored
Bring your own domain

Fully white-label. Run Teams calling under your own domain; we still manage the certificate and renewals.

sip:alice@voice.yourbrand.com
  • Your brand on every registration
  • Verified in your Microsoft 365 tenant
  • Certificate managed for you
For ITSPs and PBX vendors

Own the customer. Keep the margin.

Microsoft makes Teams calling lucrative and operationally brutal to run yourself. We are the certified, white-label SBC layer in between.

Keep your carrier and your margins

Direct Routing terminates on your own trunks at your own rates. No Microsoft Calling Plans, no per-minute resale: the minutes, and the margin, stay yours.

No SBC to buy, certify or cluster

Microsoft has paused new SBC certifications. Plug into our already-certified, carrier-grade SBC estate instead of sourcing, licensing and patching your own.

No PowerShell, ever

PSTN usages, voice routes and routing policies are generated for you. Turn on Teams calling for a user, or a whole tenant, from a portal in a few clicks.

Multi-tenant from one platform

Onboard hundreds of customer tenants from shared, isolated infrastructure. Per-tenant domains and routing keep every customer cleanly separated.

White-label end to end

Your brand, your portal, your invoice. Sell Teams calling as your own product while we run the SBCs and provisioning behind the scenes.

Bring your own carrier and numbers

Keep your existing PSTN provider and number inventory. We bridge them into Teams, no forced porting to Microsoft, no lock-in.

Any country, any PBX

Light up Teams calling in regions Calling Plans never reach, and keep your Asterisk, FreeSWITCH or BroadWorks core, analog devices and contact center in the loop.

Compliant, encrypted by default

Mutual-TLS signalling and SRTP media, dynamic E911 with a certified routing service, and policy-based compliance recording, configured for you.

We track Microsoft for you

From the June 2026 SBC certificate changes to daily certification testing, we keep the estate current so a Microsoft change never drops your customers’ calls.

Direct Routing vs the alternatives

Calling Plans, Operator Connect, or Direct Routing?

A single Teams tenant can mix all three. Direct Routing is the one that keeps the carrier, the numbers and the margin on your side.

FAQ

Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, answered

What is Direct Routing as a Service (DRaaS)?

It is a managed service where we run the certified Session Border Controllers, PSTN connectivity and Teams provisioning needed to connect Microsoft Teams to the phone network, so you get Teams calling without buying or operating your own SBC. It is unrelated to Disaster Recovery as a Service.

What is the difference between Direct Routing and Operator Connect?

Direct Routing connects Teams to any carrier through a certified SBC, giving you full carrier choice, BYOC and PBX integration. Operator Connect is a Microsoft program limited to participating operators who run the SBC, with setup in the Teams Admin Center. Direct Routing is what lets you keep your own carrier and margins.

Can I sell Microsoft Teams calling under my own brand?

Yes. Because only the SBC is certified, not the carrier, any provider with certified, multi-tenant SBC infrastructure can deliver Direct Routing. Spanvox runs that layer white-label, so you brand, price and own the customer relationship while we handle the SBCs and provisioning.

Do I need a certified SBC?

Microsoft only supports Direct Routing with certified SBCs that hold a valid trusted TLS certificate. With Spanvox you do not buy or run one: we operate certified, carrier-grade, multi-tenant SBCs on your behalf.

Can one SBC serve multiple tenants?

Yes. Microsoft supports a single SBC serving many Teams tenants, the model built for carriers and partners. We use per-tenant subdomains and Contact-header routing so you can onboard many customers from shared, isolated, cost-efficient infrastructure.

Do my customers still need a Microsoft licence?

Yes. Every Direct Routing user needs a Microsoft Teams Phone licence from Microsoft, regardless of provider. That is the one cost a service like ours cannot remove. We take care of everything else: the SBCs, certificates, routing, emergency calling and security.

How fast can we onboard a tenant or user?

Self-managed setups involve SBC provisioning, DNS, certificates and voice-routing configuration that can take days. With automated multi-tenant provisioning, new tenants and users go live in minutes from the portal.

Does it support emergency calling (E911 / E112)?

Yes. We deliver compliant dynamic emergency calling on Direct Routing, integrated with a certified emergency routing service and the location plumbing (PIDF-LO, LIS and emergency routing policies) configured for you.

Can Direct Routing run alongside Operator Connect or Calling Plans?

Yes. A single Teams tenant can mix connectivity types per user, so you can use Direct Routing for the sites that need a specific carrier, PBX integration or region, while other users stay on Operator Connect or Calling Plans.

Is Microsoft Teams Direct Routing being deprecated?

No. Direct Routing remains fully supported. Microsoft is changing the SBC TLS certificate requirements in 2026, which means every connected SBC must be updated to keep calls flowing. We manage that for you.
